On It Needs to be Written Down Somewhere

The universe is subject to natural law.

Capitalism is based on the idea of infinite growth. This is obviously unsustainable. (Granted, what with the heat death of the universe looming, anything is essentially unsustainable, but whatever).

The on topic point is this. Role Playing Game publishing is a piss poor method of making money. Once your consumers have your rulebooks they never need buy anything again. They can play your game forever.

IT IS A GOOD THING THAT THERE ARE MANY REASONS FOR DOING SOMETHING BESIDES MAKING MONEY.

"A business that makes nothing but money is a poor business."
Henry Ford

  1. Apparently I just feel the need to vent about this every few weeks. Apologies.

  3. Well, it certainly true that nobody gets rich the RPG publishing. I’ve heard that said by too many veterans of the field.

On the other hand, there are plenty of ways to build a profitable business that includes publishing RPGs. It isn’t, however, coming up with some clever scheme. It’s sizing your business to fit the market, creating the kinds of products you’d want to buy yourself, diversification, and other good business practices that have been around forever.
